Recent Prep Student Achievements

Ninety-three senior members of the John A. Convery, SJ., Chapter of the National Honor Society will be recognized at an assembly on May 14. Also at this assembly 99 juniors will be inducted into the National Honor Society.

Elizabeth Mensah has been named a recipient of National Achievement Scholarship based on her performance on the PSAT Merit Scholarship exam.

Kathryn Feeney, Nicholas Matone, and Matthew McGrath have been named National Merit Finalists for their outstanding performance on the PSAT Merit Scholarship Exam.

The Prep Players presented their spring production Guys and Dolls for two very successful weekends.

Scranton Prep’s Mock Trial team placed first in their district and continued on to the state competition, where they finished third in the state.

Juniors Alex Cameron, Stephen Gan, and Lauren Opsasnick have been selected by the United States National Chemistry Olympiad to take the USNCO qualifying exam.

Five students won awards for their projects at the Science Olympiad at Penn State Lehman Campus in March. Seniors Ben Hyers and Nick Matone won fourth place awards. Juniors Nicole Adamski and Mary Theresa Condosta won second place awards. Sophomore Erin Berlew won a second place award.

Prep’s Speech and Debate Teams participated in and performed very well in several competitions this year. In the most recent competition, freshman Allison Durkin took first place in Declamation and will represent Prep at the National Tournament.

Senior Matt McGrath has been named Math Student of The Year by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Council of Mathematics. This award is based on Matt’s outstanding math skills as well as his overall academic, extracurricular, and service achievements.

Junior Alex Cameron finished in the top five on the annual Marywood Math Contest—junior/senior level.

Results on this year’s National Latin exam show that one hundred and eighty-three students merited awards. Four students had perfect papers: Sarah Babinski, Lewis Esposito, Allison Durkin, and Fallon Tarapchak. Forty-nine students won gold medals, 66 earned silvers medals, 29 received magna cum laude certificates, and 39 cum laude certificates.

Scranton Prep’s Scholastic Bowl team finished second in their last competition, sponsored by NEIU 19 at the Radisson Hotel.

Prep Math teams took first and second place in competitions at the annual Bloomsburg Math Contest.

Fourteen students took the American Chemistry Society High School Chemistry Exam. Many students took the National French, German, and Spanish exams. Results on all these exams have not yet been received.
